The growth of individual yeast cells has been observed by time-lapse photography. The position of a bud with respect to the mother cell has been found to possess a certain regularity and is dependent on ploidy. The first bud of a new cell is at the birth end of the mother for haploid cells, while at the opposite end for polyploid cells. In addition the first few buds tend to arise from the same point on the mother cell.
