RESULTSThe effects of NE and 5-HT on the process of arousal from hibernation were tested in 11 experiments on 6 animals with PO/AH cannulas. In every case, NE and 5-HT initiated complete arousal from hibernation. The average latency of response (Z~ SEM) in eight NE experiments was 19 rt 3 min, and the average time taken to reach stable active-state temperatures was 130= t 13 min. In three experiments testing 5-HT, the average latency was 40= t 20 min and the average time taken to complete arousal was 150 & 30 min. Figure 1 illustrates the arousal from hibernation after 0.4 I, cg of NE and 0.8 pug of 5-HT. The latency of response was 15 min following NE and 20 min following 5-HT. The time course of arousal was 105 min following NE and 120 min following 5-HT. The lower panel of Fig. 1 shows the absence of any effect of a control injection of 0.2 pug of sodium bitartrate(control for 0.4 pug of NE) on temperature and hibernation. In order to accomplish the experiments in hibernating animals, it was usually necessary to alter the ground squirrel’s postural position within its nest so as to insert the
