The Taiyuan Formation in Yangquan, Shanxi, aging from late Late Carboniferous to early Early Permian, is remarkably developed, and a typical section of this formation in Shuiquan valley has been systematically measured and described. Abundant and well-preserved brachiopod fossils of 125 species, belonging to 31 families and 48 genera, are recognized at this locality. Based on the detailed studies of these brachiopod fossils, three early Early Permian brachiopod assemblages (middle-upper part of the Taiyuan Formation) are recognized in and listed in descending order as follows: (3) Martinia semiplana-Choristites jigulensis Assemblage, (2) Alexania gratiodentalis-Notothyris nucleolus Assemblage, (1) Derbyia shanxiensis-Chonetinella flemingi Assemblage.
