Several thousand persons lost their lives, and many more suffered the deaths of family members and friends or were left homeless, when earthquakes struck Mexico City on 19 September 1985. Everything happened so quickly that many surely died without being clearly aware of what was happening. The collective drama is undoubtedly one of the most painful experiences in the history of our country. One aspect of this disaster was its effects on the mental health of the victims and the rest of the population. The term disaster is appropriate in referring to this event, which caused a loss of lives and material goods on an enormous scale. It was truly a great disaster, producing changes in the functioning and the structure of the human group that was subjected to it and evoking psychological and collective survival mechanisms that are not used in normal life.
