The submandibular glands can be useful in differentiating among the effects of exogenously-applied secretagogues by observation of secretary responses, particularly the types of salivary proteins secreted, in both young and adult rats (Abe and Dawes, 1982, 1985). Thus, the present work was designed to determine the effects on rat submandibular glands of different types of autonomic drugs with and without various blocking agents, and also to elucidate the functional differences of secretary responses among various receptors.
