The National Union of Students (NUS) represents students from all four nations of the UK. From its creation in 1922, the NUS has worked to bring together students from across the UK, breaking down barriers of region, class, gender and ethnicity. Until 1971, the NUS represented students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as there was a separate Scottish Union of Students (SUS). For the last 40 years, students from across the UK have been united in their representation through the NUS and have worked together to support students. This chapter examines attitudes within the NUS to the four nations. It describes how students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland were represented from 1922 to 1970. It goes on to discuss the issues and debates that surrounded the incorporation of Scottish students into NUS in 1971 and the impact of devolution on NUS and the ways in which they have negotiated discussions of internal nationalism within a unified organisation.
