The influence of the redox potential and pH on the mobility of the potentially toxic elements Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd and As has so far been determined theoretically. When present in soil affected by ground water these elements shows pronounced variations in concentration in the ground water. The analysis of ground water taken from different soil horizons in the Heisinger Aue area (Essen, West Germany) confirmed the theoretically calculated influence of the redox potential and pH on the mobility of these elements.
