In this paper, a specification is created for a linear generator to form the power take off in a wave energy converter. A simple model is used in combination with sea data from a testing site to estimate expected power output across a full year. Variation of spring and damping coefficients has been used as way of altering power take off characteristics and device energy capture. Results are used to propose a rated force of the required power take off and an indicative design of a direct drive electrical machine is proposed.
