This is a translation from the Russian of a paper which appeared in Bull. appl. Bot., Genet., Pl. Breed. 1928, 19, 325-74, English summary pp. 370-4. The translators, H. J. Kidd and H. C. Reynolds, state that the paper contains the only extensive studies of maize in the Orient and is of particular interest in view of recent findings concerning the geography of races of maize.-D.B.
