METHODSPatients. Six patients with acute encephalopathy and a focal neurologic examination or seizures who were hospitalized at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital during a 4-week period in late summer and early fall of 1996 were tested serologically for antibodies to arboviruses. Five of the patients lived in the same geographic area. A total of five male patients were diagnosed at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital, all initially admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit, and one male patient was diagnosed at a nearby hospital (Patient 6). Two patients from the same housing subdivision who were hospitalized during the same week were chosen for case reports.
