Samples of pyrrhotite have been oxidized at 50°, 43°, 35° and 28°C with 62% RH; and at 50°C with 75, 55, 50 and 37% RH, for periods up to 7 days. The results indicate that the oxidation proceeds by a sequence of reactions to give FeSO4, Fe(OH)(SO4)·xH2O and ultimately ferric oxide and elemental sulfur. The formation of ferric oxide obeys the parabolic rate law at all values of temperature and relative humidity. The reflectance spectral study of the oxidized samples of pyrrhotite indicates that an undefined ferrous-ferric sulfate is formed as an intermediate in the oxidation of FeSO4to Fe(OH)(SO4)·xH2O.
