The rapid transformation and growing complexity of the health care marketplace has created new challenges for health services research. Chief among these challenges is to create an environment in which the market approach can work as well as possible. Because a basic tenet of marketdriven health care is the opportunity for informed choices by purchasers, the availability of valid information is an essential building block of a healthy health care system. Health care researchers have an opportunity to contribute by providing the information and tools that all the stakeholders-patients, providers, purchasers, health plans, and policymakers at all levels-need to make informed decisions, measure and monitor quality, and seek value for the money they spend on health care services.Health services researchers, now more than ever, need to ensure that the products of their work are based on science and evidence, and that they are translated into practical innovations and knowledge for application toward improved health care. In particular, quality-related information, starting from the foundation of outcomes research and evidence-based medicine, is critical to clinicians who are striving to provide the right care, to the right patient, at the right time. Health services researchers also must quench the growing consumer thirst for quality-related information that will help them make informed choices about their personal health and, when they have the opportunity, informed decisions about the services they receive.
