Normal loss of the left 4th aortic arch is due to mechanical forces. These include pulling down of the ventral ends of the arches into the peri-cardial cavity, by descent of the heart, and the action on them, when in this position, of the spiral torsion of the heart tube. The torsion is a necessary result of the loop assumed by the chick heart, and rotates the left vessel to the ventral surface of the trunk, thus causing it to bend sharply. Obliteration normally follows this disadvantageous course, but can be prevented when the vessel becomes necessary. As the result of experiment, the ventricles of the heart were inverted and the spiral of the common trunk completely unwound. Under these circumstances, the left 4th arch becomes the definitive aortic arch, the right being relegated to a subordinate position as a segment of the dorsal carotid artery. This is closely analogous to the condition in mammals.
