The history of the polar-body nuclei is descr. Cleavage nuclei reach the periphery throughout the egg at the onset of the formation of the blastema. The blasteme nuclei undergo 3 consecutive and synchronous divisions at the periphery. Mitosis of the blasteme nuclei is descr. The pole cells are budded off during the 1st and 2d blasteme mitoses. As long as there is protoplasmic continuity between the polar buds and the posterior ooplasm, the polar nuclei undergo division synchronously with the blasteme nuclei. Some of the pole cells migrate between the blastoderm nuclei before completion of the blastoderm posteriorly ; the rest of the pole cells migrate into the amnio-proctodeal invagination. A method for obtaining eggs of D. melanogaster of known ages is descr. Time tables for the early development, extending from the 2d maturation division to the 3d blasteme karyokinesis, have been constructed. The ay. rate of mitosis of the cleavage nuclei and of the blasteme nuclei has been estimated from the time tables at 3 different temps.
