This multiauthored work (68 distinguished authors) consists of two major sections. The first contains 35 chapters dealing with antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, and antiviral agents. The second, "Current Topics in Antimicrobial Therapy," consists of 12 well-written reviews. The editors of this ambitious work note that it is to be the first in a series of annual volumes designed to keep pace with the rapid advances in antimicrobial chemotherapy. They disclaim any responsibility in providing a comprehensive textbook; instead, their goal is to assess new information critically and to place it in current perspective. Despite its impressive size (582 pages), the book may not be usable as a reference because basic information is not always included. The chapter on cephalosporin (Sanders and Sanders) is relatively large (25 pages) compared with the others.
