D 11, A 10, P 11, C 1], Two plates obliquely between upper and median ridges, tom'between median and pelvic~'idges. Depth 2.4, length of head 3.7 in length of body to caudal base. Eye 2.4, snout 1, 3, interorbital (bony ridge) l.? in length of head. Width of back above peetora. l 4.0, of belly at same level 3" I in length of body t, oc~ mdal base. Carapace six-angled, wider below than above.(~ arapace quite rigid, formed laterally and dorsally mainly of rough marginally ridged scutes, while ventrMly and on the cheeks each seute bears a eent, rM bony tubercle, composed of numerous fi~ sed studs. Vent. narrowly sm'rounded by a naked area. Carapace nominally open fi'om origin of dorsal, and from before the vent, p (~ steriorly, but behind the dorsal and anal there is no,: lear demarcation of a fi'ee edge. Over the whole eircuml> renee of the ani, erior]) art of the caudal peduncle are mnnerous, separate, but closely articulating groups of l'u,~ e (I plates, which virtually extend the carapace posteriorly on the dorsal and ventral surfaces, almost to the caudal ba~ e. This armature is distinct from t. he carapace proper in being markedly less rigid, and in the absence of ridges on the individual plates, each of which bears a composite rough studded tubercle much like those on the plates of the chest. Dorsally, immediately behind the, torsal. is a bridging unit in the form of a large irregularly,~ val i~ land of fused tnbercular plates, with transversely: L ma. ximmn of live, and longitudinally in three series. The anterior margins of this unit art. ieulate laterally with lhe posterior dorsal flanges of the carapace, though the~ aked skin may clearly be discerned between them.(A comparable but isolated structure shows obscurely in the figm: c of Kenl. rocag) ros (1, cu, lea. tu, s Houl. tuyn, 1782, by Tanaka, Fishes of Japan. 1912, vol. vii, p]. xxxi, though it. is not mentioned in the description.) Behind this~ tnter-or unit are five series of articulating islands, the anterior pair of 4-)-2 plates, next 2 eaeh of 3 plates, the 4t. h of 2 plates, and the last a single isolated tubercle. Tim anterior plates in this series have a narrow low margin about the central tubercle, but this diminishes 23*"
