Weight changes during two behavioral treatment programs were compared with baseline weights of 10 obese women, median age, 41.5 years, in a single-subject design. Weekly weights were obtained from the TOPS Club of which theSs were members for three months prior to the beginning of the study. TheSs monitored their weights for two weeks, then monitored both weight and food intake for an additional two weeks. TheSs were then randomly assigned to one of two conditions: In Condition 1, theSs were taught self-control principles (SC) for five weeks, and then underwent an experimenter controlled reinforcement program (EC) for five weeks. The order of treatments was reversed forSs in Condition 2. TheSs' weekly weights then were obtained from the TOPS Club for an additional four weeks. The results indicated that both SC and EC produced weight losses in overweight women, but only the losses effected by EC were large enough to be of practical value. Weight losses were maintained during follow-up. The results also indicated considerable agreement between self-report of weight and weights obtained byE. The implications for the present study for behavior therapy and research were discussed.
