This chapter offers an analysis of responsibility with regard to emerging fields of science and technology, characterized by far reaching visions and expectations of their revolutionary potential, which can border on hype. The chapter first analyses a series of five historic episodes that illustrate evolving repertoires of nanofutures, and introduces notions of nano as a flexible label. Secondly, it discusses preliminary lessons for responsible (research and) innovation (RRI) derived from understanding nano as narratives, visions, and conflicts. Two empirical narratives are offered discussing how the notion of responsibility has been applied in conjunction with nano: first, as part of a process of “defuturization” of nano in Germany, mainly as part of technology assessment (TA) activities and second, in university–industry relations around knowledge and technology transfer in the United States. The chapter concludes with a summary of approach and some implications for RRI.
