MethodsThe study sites were two inpatient psychiatric units that were part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Both units used a single clinical laboratory system for performing blood testing. A total of 656 adult psychiatric patients were admitted over 18 months (2003–2005). The study sample included 588 patients for whom blood samples were available.
