Superficial bladder tumors (T1, pT1 of the TNM classification (UICC, 1974) or Jewett Stage 0 and A) are usually treated by transurethral resection (TUR). However, recurrence of the tumor after complete resection occurs in about 60% of the patients (8, 10, 21, 22, 28) with a significant percentage of these recurrences showing a higher degree of malignancy (10, 22). In 10% of the cases the tumor progresses to invasive carcinoma (8) and the 5-year survival rate following TUR is about 62% (8, 18, 28). Most of these recurrent tumors will occur within 6 to 12 months.
