MATERIALS AND METHODSThe methods used for the isolation of trypanosomes were similar to those used by Kinghorn et al.(1913). Thin blood films were made from shot-wounds or heart blood at the time of death; they were fixed with methyl alcohol, stained with Giemsa's stain, and examined for at least two hours.Fresh heparinized blood from 21 animals was inoculated intraperitoneally into laboratory rats, usually immediately and always within 4S minutes of death. The rats were kept in containers protected from tsetse flies (Glossina spp.). Uninoculated controls, all of which remained uninfected, were also maintained. The blood of all rats was examined for trypanosomes at intervals not exceeding four days.
