Abstract Relatively little information exists on the year-round distribution of large whales in the Bering Sea. Although visual surveys have provided information on the summertime occurrence of North Pacific right, humpback and fin whales, during other times of the year such surveys are ineffective to investigate the presence of these whales, and passive acoustics is used instead. We deployed autonomous hydrophone instruments from June 2006-June 2007 on three Bering Sea oceanographic moorings (BS-2, BS-4 and BS-5) located along the 70 m isobath. In order to better understand the physical processes affecting the distribution and habitats of vocal large whales, we compared the occurrence of the species-specific calls of these species with in-situ and satellite-derived oceanographic data, including ice cover, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll a concentration. The southeastern-most instrument (BS-2) recorded calls from all three species seasonally. While fin and humpback whale calls were relatively common on the middle instrument (BS-4), very few of their calls were recorded on the northwestern most instrument (BS-5). Seasonal ice cover was greatest over mooring BS-5 but in 2006-07 came down as far as BS-2. Unsurprisingly, none of the three whale species were recorded when the instruments were under ice, although other Arctic-adapted species such as bowhead whales, bearded seals and walruses were recorded in heavy ice conditions. In all cases temperature, chlorophyll and salinity varied with location and time of year. Temperatures were highest at BS-2 and lowest at BS-5 and chlorophyll peaks were very different at the three sites.
