Cebuella, Callithrix, Leontopithecus and Saguinus share 5 distinguishing features. All of these features are best interpreted as derived character states within Platyrrhini, and these animals are phyletic dwarfs. These derived traits may form a single complex that evolved as a result of dwarfing. Two changes in the dentition are correlated with dwarfing in mammals. These 4 platyrrhine genera may or may not form a monophyletic group. Callimico may be an incipient dwarf platyrrhine. Causes of dwarfing in mammals are discussed.
