The chapters in this book confirm the need for scholars and policy-makers to take a holistic view of the migration process.1 There is an almost seamless transition which takes us from the decision of the individual to move, through the process of movement and the roles of intermediaries to incorporation into the host labour market and society. The process then continues through a settlement process of varying lengths which is mediated by the attitudes of migrants, those of migrant background (which we sometimes call second or third generations) and the receiving society. When or whether the migration process ever ends is a moot point. What is certain is that the scale and nature of migration waves, short or long term, differentiated by age, gender, ethnicity or skill, largely determine social and geographical outcomes.
