Past, present, and future studies of glass structure by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) are surveyed. Quadrupole or chemical shift effects for various nuclei (10B,11B,17O,29Si,125Te) are analyzed to produce structural models for glasses. Temperature-dependent properties of NMR spectra are used to monitor ion hopping in glasses and secure the activation energies. High-field NMR with sample spinning is exemplified with29Si,27Al and23Na nuclei. Future NMR studies of glass structure will involve many additional nuclei including those of Ge, Mg, Sc, La, Nb, and Zr.
