Eu2+-doped Sr3GdNa(PO4)3F, belonging to belovite-type halo-phosphate, is able to display reversible colorless-cyan photochromism (PC) when irradiated alternatively by UV (200–320 nm) and visible light (or thermal treatment). Such an observation delivers that a dual P-/T-type photochromic material has been obtained, which makes it potential to be used in the field of photo switchers, erasable optical memory media, imaging and sensors. The reversible PC shows high fatigue resistane and long-lived features. The coloration and bleaching is attributed to the capture of elctrons by different traps along with the formation of F-centers and the releasing of the trapped electrons, respectively. It allows us to design a straightforward and universal method to control the photochromic behavior via changing the Eu2+contents or co-doping with Ln3+(Ln = Y, La-Sm, Tb-Lu) ions on the basis of the concept “traps modulation”, which paves a way to modify the density of information writing and reading. In addition, with the thermoluminescence (TL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques, an energy level schematic for PC mechanism is also proposed.
