The Pax6 transcription factor is a highly conserved regulator of eye and brain development. Its complex mode of regulation is shared between Drosophila melanogaster and the vertebrates, despite there being no significant sequence identity between their enhancer and promoter regions. In this article, a more detailed examination of the Pax6 genomic sequence reveals a common set of putative Pax6 and basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor binding sites.
