As reviewed by Berkman and Breslow (1983, Chap. 3 ) , a growing body of literature indicates a relationship between physical health and a set of basic health practices first identified by Belloc and Breslow ( 1 9 7 2 ) . Since physical health and mental health are closely related. this srudy examined the relationship between this set of health practices and mental health among 128 civil service employees at a rnidwcstern university. The examined health practices and the frequencies of positive responses were moderate physical activity (95 .2%) , nor smoking (45 .2%) , moderate or no alcohol use ( 8 5 . 7 % ) , desirable weight for height (71.4%; 11.1% were underweight and 17.5 % overweight), seven to eight hr. sleep per night (72.2% ), eating breakfast (67 .5%) , and not snacking between meals (69 .0%) . Mental health was measured o n the General Well-being Schedule which yielded a mean score of 74.8. The distribution of scores on chis scale showed positive well-being for 74.1% of the sample, problems indicative of stress for 16.3%, and clinically significant distress for 9.6%. Relationships between the two measures were examined by canonical correlation. N o canonical variares were significant ( 9 = .05); however, since this was an exploratory study, the .1 significance level was applied and one significant canonical vatiate with an alpha of ,057 was noted. The health practice of eating breakfast daily showed a high positive coefficient ( .327) while high negative coefficients were found for sleeping 7 to 8 hr. per night (.603), obesity (.575), and smoking ( ,328) . High positive coefficients were found for the General Well-being Schedule scales of Relaxed vs Tense ( 3 3 7 ) and Energy Level ( .635), and a high negative coefficient for Emotional-Behavioral Control ( -.442). In simpler terms, persons who eat breakfast daily, are obese, smoke and sleep more or less than the average, will tend to have high energy, to be relaxed rather than tense or anxious, and to have poor emotional or behavioral self-control. This study suggests there should be value in further exploration of the relationships between mental health (mental wellness) and health practices (those studied here and others).
