A transient acoustic emission signal is represented as the product of a decaying exponential and a stationary Gaussian random process with zero mean. A relationship between the number of positive‐going crossings (counts) at a given level, the decay rate, the zero crossing rate, and the mean square of the stationary portion of the signal is developed. Experimentally determined level‐crossing data for both simulated and actual acoustic emission signals show good agreement with the derived relationship. A technique for extracting the three signal parameters from experimental data is given.
