Collections of biting flies attacking cattle or caught in light-traps were made in the Rockhampton-Brisbane area of Queensland from 30th January to 8th April 1968, during an epizootic of ephemeral fever in cattle. A total of 18 009 Ceratopogonids of three species, 5939 Culicids of 23 species and 190 examples ofAustrosimulium pestilensMack. & Mack. and 88 ofHaematobia exigua[Haematobia irritans exigua]de Meij. were collected.Culicoides brevitarsisKieff. andCulex annulirostrisSkuse were the commonest insects biting cattle, and it is considered that these two species in coastal areas andCulicoides marksiLee & Reye,C. dyceiLee & Reye andCulex annulirostrisin inland areas should be investigated further as possible vectors of ephemeral fever [cf. RAEB 58 515, etc.]. The results of attempts to isolate virus from these insects are given in another paper [cf.next abstract].
