25 The fields of geriatric medicine and gerontology take pride in the multidisciplinary/26 interdisciplinary team approach to caring for and exploring ways to improve the lives of older 27 adults. These teams often include health care professionals such as physicians, nurses, nurse 28 practitioners, physician assistants, dentists, ophthalmologists, opticians, audiologists, physical 29 and occupational therapists, pharmacists, podiatrists, and social workers. 1, 2 Often the challenges 30 addressed by these teams involve physical or functional needs that benefit from innovation in 31 assistive devices, accessible technology, and environmental adaptations. 3 Yet, rarely are 32 engineers or even the older adults themselves formally included as team members. It is time to 33 update older concepts of the multidisciplinary geriatric team to a new model that includes 34 geriatric engineering programs.35 Adding geriatric engineering creates a powerful new opportunity for contemporary health care 36 education curriculum to more effectively and efficiently address the unmet needs of older adults 37 today, as well as (perhaps even more importantly) educate next generations of leaders in 38 adaptable design thinking approaches. 4, 5 (Figure 1) The incorporation of design thinking 39 frameworks into the fields of gerontology and geriatric medicine will equip us with leaders who 40 are adept at continually evolving our understanding of aging, so as to identify and address not 41 just today’s needs, but also to address the emerging needs of tomorrow.
