In this paper we will review recent data indicating that a state of idiotypic suppression is transferred from a female mouse to its offspring when the mother is given T cells or serum from a syngeneic donor that has been suppressed with respect to that idiotype and hyperimmunized. The serum factor (or factors) can also induce idiotype suppression when inoculated directly into a neonatal mouse. The component of serum that initially induces suppression appears not to be an immunoglobulin; however, the nature of the suppressive substance that is transferred from mother to fetus is not yet known. Before presenting these data some of our earlier work on suppression of idiotype will be reviewed briefly.
