The oldest macrofossil of Marsileaceae, Regnellites nagashimae gen. et sp. nov. from the Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Kiyosue Formation of western Japan is described. The new genus Regnellites is characterized by two leaflets, anastomosing venation without a marginal vein, and very large sporocarps at the nodes. A comparison between Regnellites and other heterosporous water fern genera indicates that the genus is distinct from the living and fossil genera of Marsileaceae.
