In Japan Pike's selective broth [6] has been widely used as an enrichment medium for the pyogenic group of streptococci. This broth contains crystal violet and sodium azide as selective agents. The former exhibits bactericidal activity towards grampositive bacteria, especially staphylococci and the latter is bacteriostatic for gramnegative bacteria. Naturally occurring bacteria in the throat such as Stophylococcus, Hemophilus and coliforms are largely inhibited in this medium. Pike's selective broth supports the growth of the pyogenic group of streptococci, but at the same time permits alpha-and non-hemolytic streptococci to grow. Several other selective agents have since been reported. Kanamycin and mycostatin applied by Moustardiet et al [4], neomycin, polymixin B and fusidic acid by Lowbury et al [2], nalidixic acid by Beerens and Talon-Castel [1] seemed to be worth mentioning. However, none of these authors reported the successful inhibition of the viridans group in or on their selective media.
