To establish evaluation anthropology, we must define a position from which anthropology can add value to the pursuit of evaluation. This article examines overlaps in the theory and methods of anthropology as well as ways in which anthropological training can strengthen evaluation. A brief presentation of parallel trends in the development of the two fields precedes a heuristic definition of evaluation anthropology and a discussion of complementarities in contemporary use of methods and theories by evaluators and anthropologists. The article concludes with recommendations for steps anthropologists can take to build synergy between evaluation and anthropology and promote the emergence of an evaluation anthropology.
