Globally, green growth policies, such as focusing on the development of hydropower are emerging rapidly. This represents a significant opportunity for countries to incorporate ecosystem services into land management, which can enable them to integrate environmental and developmental goals. Such integration would play a role in achieving sustainable economic growth which is so crucial for developing economies. This paper presents the case of Bhutan. Its objective is to (a) analyse water resources and forest cover characteristics, (b) assess potential of hydropower to enhance green growth, and (c) discuss the challenges of Bhutan striving for sustainable development in the face of global environmental change. For this purpose, the paper analyses the influence of watershed conservation on socio-economic development through hydropower development. The results reveal that the Bhutan Himalaya is rich in water resources and can provide significant ecosystem services for the socio-economic development in the region. Past experience in Bhutan also shows significant economic returns from ecosystem services through forest conservation. This paper is intended to document the land cover status and its contribution to economic development through the use of ecosystem services.
