ABSTRACT Five varieties of apples were dropped from 5 to 25 cm onto a piezoelectric impact force transducer. The measured impact parameters were related to bruise volume during 250 days of refrigerated and CA storage. The change in bruise volume/unit change in absorbed energy first declined slightly followed by a significant decrease with storage time. The change in bruise volume per unit change in approach energy increased with storage time with differences between varieties and type of storage. Impact contact time increased during storage time with differences between varieties. The (peak force / time to peak force) ratio, F/T, was highly correlated with approach energy and decreased during storage.
