This paper is a follow-up of the first report, published in the same journal[Am. J.Med. Sci., 1973, v. 266, 169; thisBulletin, 1974, v. 71, abstr. 447], on the immunization of human subjects by bites of irradiatedAnopheles stephensiinfected withPlasmodium falciparum. One of the volunteers who was exposed during the period of 421 days to 1441 X-irradiatedA. stephensiinfected with the Burma (Thai) strain ofP. falciparumshowed a high degree of protection in response to challenging infections with the homologous strain and other strains of falciparum malaria from Malaya, Panama and the Philippines. The resulting immunity was species-specific since a challenge with the Chesson strain of P.vivaxwas followed by an overt infection. The serum of the subject showed a positive circumsporozoite precipitation (CSP) test at 1 in 40 dilution against all the relevant strains ofP. falciparum, but was negative against the Chesson strain ofP. vivax. The CSP test remained positive at 1 in 20 dilution for 4 months after the immunization, and the duration of the protective immunity is now being investigated.L. J. Bruce-Chwatt.
