Hibiscus rosa-sinensisL. cultivar ‘Brilliant Red’ plants were exposed to various environmental factors to determine their effect on bud abscission during simulated shipping. High temperature (30°C) increased bud abscission and decreased leaf chlorophyll concentrations after 4 days in dark storage. Plants stored at 10°C appeared to be of higher visual quality immediately after storage than plants stored at 20 or 30°C.A 4-mM silver thiosulfate (STS) spray was effective in reducing C2H4-induced bud abscission in hibiscus as compared to water-sprayed control plants. Silver thiosulfate was also effective in reducing abscission in plants stored at 10, 20 or 30°C for 4 days in the dark. Phytotoxicity was not observed in response to the STS spray, and after 20 days in a simulated office environment plants sprayed with STS still had not abscised as many buds as controls. Thus, STS proved to be an effective tool for controlling bud abscission in hibiscus plants.
