Introduction eyclopoid copepods play an important role in freshwater systems. In many lakes they are the dominant zooplankters for long periods within the year. During their life cycle a shift in the feeding habit from herbivory to carnivory takes place. While the juvenile instar stages feed mostly on algae the late copepodite stages and the adults are predaceous and might have a strong influence on the zooplankton community. l. AMPERT & ScHo-BEII.(1978) observed a high mortality of Daphnia in the presence of cyclopoid copepods in spring in Lake eonstance, despite good food conditions for the cladoceran. They hypothesized that the predatory cyclopoid stages controlled the Daphnia population during spring, thereby protecting the herbivorous cyclopoid juveniles from food competition with Daphnia. In Lake Schierensee, a small eutrophic lake in Northern Germany, a shift from a cyclopoid dominated winter community to a cladoceran summer community was observed (Now AK 1975). Accordingly a detailed study of the interactions between cyclopoid copepods and cladocerans was undertaken in this lake. eyclopoid predation on cladocerans was estimated joint! y by the analyses of population abundances and experimental predation rates on Daphnia. Observations of Daphnia populations under natural conditions, with and without the predaceous cyclopoids, provided further tests of the ability of cyclopoids to control Daphnia populations.
