METHODSAU of the experiments were performed on mongrel dogs. Prior to use in the laboratory, all of the animals were deparisitized and kept in quarantine for at least 2 weeks. During this period they were fed daily, ad lib., commercial(Purina) dog chow. They were not fed the morning of the experiment. The animals were anesthetized with an intravenous injection of sodium pentobarbital, 30 mg/kg, and additional doses of 30 mg were administered when needed.Procedures for Ute glycogen study. In animals used for the glycogen study, the gastrocnemius-plantaris muscle group in both hindlimbs was surgically exposed through medial incisions extending from the popliteal region to the ankle. The connective tissue and fat which covered each muscle group were carefully separated and retracted. The exposed muscles were covered with salinesoaked gauze to prevent evaporative drying and cooling. The surgical exposure, prior to the experimental period, made it possible to remove the muscles within a few seconds after the experiment was completed in an effort to avoid glycogenolysis.
