DI PRAMPERO, P. IL, CTM DAVIES, P. CERRETELLI, AND R. MARGARIA. An analysis of 02 debt contracted in submaximal exercise. J. AppZ. Physiol. 29 (5): 547-551. 1970.-The kinetics of 02 uptake# OS) in man performing a submaximal exercise, in the transition from light to heavier work appears to be faster (tr, z= 17 s) than in the transition from rest to work (tl/z= 30 s). The difference in Vo, at the onset of exercise, ie, the gross 02 debt, is reduced correspondingly. This reduction presumably does not take place at the expense of the net 02 debt; this, being the expression of the amount of split phosphagen present in the muscle at steady state, should be related only to the work intensity, independent of the previous history of muscle activity. It is presumably due a) to the greater utilization of the 02 stores of the body when the exercise starts from rest and b) to a certain amount of LA formation from glycogen. This has been found to take place to a limited extent at the onset of work, but not in the transition from light to heavier exercise. In the transition from mild to heavier work only the gross alactic 02 debt is then affected, The velocity of the 02 uptake in this condition would tend to approach the velocity of the contraction of the net alactic 02 debt.02 debt, gross and netIT HAS BEEN FOUND in man that, in submaximal exercise not involving lactic acid production, the 02 consumption during the transition from rest to work and during the immediate recovery period changes as an exponential function of time, the j 1/a of the processes being of the same order of magnitude~ 30 second (s)(1, 2, 7, 8, 12, 13). Similarly in the isolated dog gastrocnemius the O2 uptake at the onset of exercise has been shown to be an exponential function, which however has a tl/2 of only about 16 s (14); the decrease of the 02 uptake process in the recovery phase is also faster than in man (tl, z= 20 s). A slow fall in recovery ii02 implies a correspondingly larger 02 debt. The difference between the O2 debt found in man and in the isolated muscle has been attributed to the fact that the 02 debt, as measured in man from the respiratory gas exchange is the gross 02 debt, ie, it includes a certain amount of 02 drawn from the O2 stores of the body (12). A distinction has therefore been made between gross and net 02 debt; this last only is indicative of the energy drawn from sources other than oxidations and is given substantially, in submaximal work, by the amount of split phosphagen(ATP+ CP) in the muscles
