Anaemia is one of the most common medical conditions encountered by the anaesthetist in clinical practice. In this article, it is proposed to discuss general aspects of chronic anaemia as they affect oxygenation of the tissues. Some problems associated with specific types of anaemia, such as sicklecell disease, have been the subject of several reviews in this journal and will not be reconsidered (Browne, 1965; Gilbertson, 1965; Searle, 1973). The subject will be discussed under the following headings:
