The sera of human volunteers immunized with a phenolized tularaemia vaccine were tested for agglu-tinins againstBrucella abortus, and in 16 of 43, significant titres were obtained.Brucellaagglutinins were also observed in the sera of 5 of 28 volunteers immunized with a viable attenuated tularaemia vaccine. All of 15 rabbits immunized with killed tularaemia bacteria possessed agglutinins againstBr. abortusin their sera.Non-vaccinated volunteers who had been infected with virulent tularaemia bacteria also exhibited agglutinins againstBr. abortusin their sera, 3 of 12 after intracutaneous and 3 of 14 after administration by the respiratory route. One alone of 30 vaccinated volunteers, who had been infected with virulent tularaemia bacteria by intracutaneous or respiratory routes showed a rise inBrucellaagglutinins. In all cases, the titres against the tularaemia bacteria were higher than those againstBrucella. These studies emphasize this cross-reaction and confirm the observations of others who have noted it in cases of naturally acquired tularaemia [thisBulletin, 1927, v. 2, 230; 1952, v. 27, 1025]; they are a continuation of those made in the clinical aspects of experimental tularaemia [ibid., 1961, v. 36, 1143, and above.]R.
