Another major part of the challenge, however, is the problem of teacher training. Evidence from a variety of sources, including the 1965-66 school trials of HSGP materials, indicates that most secondary school geography teachers have received little geography training. Further, HSGP materials represent an attempt to bring geographic education closer to the research frontiers. Concepts and geographic generalizations are stressed, while the learning of facts is de-emphasized. What geography training teachers have had may therefore have little relevance to the materials. Though we attempt to make our materials easy to teach by offering a complete package and by providing carefully designed, thorough teacher’s guides, a lack of up-todate geography training may be a severe handicap for the teacher. Also unfamiliar to many teachers is the use of an inquiry approach in the classroom-allowing students to investigate questions rather than memorizing from lecture notes.Facing these problems, the Project has formulated a tentative plan to require a teacher rapid-training program as a part of the final Settlement Theme Course package. The training program, as it is now visualized, would consist of an introduction to an inquiry approach to reaching, and a review of some of the geography in the HSGP materials.
