The characteristics of one class of travelling ionospheric disturbance may be partially explained as the result of an observational selection, in which an atmospheric wave provides the basic disturbance and a hydromagnetic resonance the selection. This resonance occurs when natural modes of electromagnetic oscillation are generated through hydromagnetio coupling with the atmosphere, and it results in an enhanced motion of the ionospheric electrons which are alone observable. The quantitative comparison with observation provides estimates for the specific heat ratio (γ ~ 1.1) and scale height (C2γg ~ 20 km), which are lower than the values expected for the F2-region concerned, but which are nevertheless possible and certainly valid in order of magnitude.
