The article looks at the revised guidelines for diagnosis and management of asthma from the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program. Asthma is the most common chronic disease of school-aged children and is the leading cause of school absenteeism. The revised guidelines focus on four areas of asthma care including assessment and management of asthma, asthma education, control of environmental factors and co-morbidities, and medication therapy. The author discusses ways school nurses can implement the guideline changes into their nursing practice.
