The nucleotide (nt) sequence of theAzotobacter vinelandii recAgene (Av-recA) was determined and compared with therecAsequences fromPseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa-recA), a soil bacterium, andEscherichia coli (Ec-recA), an enteric bacterium. TheAv-recAgene and the deduced aa sequence were found to be more similar to theirPa-recAcounterparts than to theEc-recAgene and protein. Expression ofAv-recAwas found to be autoregulatory. UnlikeEc-recAandPa-recA, however, expression ofAv-recAwas weakly enhanced upon DNA damage. InE. coli, expression of anAv-recA::lacZfusion was poor, but its autoregulation was similar to that ofEc-recA.Av-recAexpression, however, could not induce the repair system response inE. coli.
