The effects of estrogen treatment on the induction of gonadal feminization were investigated in two species of salmonids, masu (Oncorhynchus masou) and chum salmon (O. keta). For 18 days, masu salmon fry were immersed in water containing estradiol-17β (E2) at various concentrations (0.25–200 μg/l water) starting from 5 days after hatching. Most fish in the groups treated with 0.5–5 μg/l had ovaries which were similar in development and structure to those of control fish of the same age, although one or two fish in each of the treated groups had intersexual gonads after 1 year.Chum salmon fry at various stages of gonadal sex differentiation were reared in water containing E2at various concentrations (0.5–2 μg/l water) for varying durations. Using 6–20-day-old fish, partial feminization was observed in their testes after treatment with 0.5 and 1 μg/l E2for 22–29 days. From these results, it is concluded that in the masu salmon, the sensitive period of the gonads to estrogen may occur from 5 to 22 days of age during the period of observed gonadal sex differentiation. In the chum salmon, the sensitivity of germ cells to estrogen in genetic males was maintained even after testicular differentiation.
