Reviews the research literature on the possible relations between the higher levels of the nervous system that are involved in emotional behavior and the neuroanatomical connections that link them to the output cells of the autonomic nervous system. The sources of the axons that have been demonstrated to project directly to the intermediolateral cells and some of the major interconnections among those sources are detailed.
